Describing the natural beauty of Ulcinj can only be attempted at and we, too, shall make such an attempt.
Nature has been extraordinarily generous to this section of the Adriatic coast, uniting together in a peculiar manner a colourful mosaic of contrasts and special appeal. It is as if nature long ago studied the diversity of modern man's hankerings and desires for communion with untouched and healthy nature bestowing its variety on this area: the pure, deep blue sea, the green-eyed River Bojana, the Isle of Ada at its mouth, rich Lake Sas, long-lived olive groves, ravishing Valdanos Cove, medicinal springs, intoxicating pine woods and widely known sandy beaches.
Dazzled by the beauty of the town, a multitude of artists have found inspiration for their works of art in it, while its exotic nature has been shown on the big screen by renowned film directors such as Zivko Nikolic and Dusan Vukotic in their films Long Ships, The Seventh Continent, The Beauty of the Vice, etc.
Majestic sandy beaches represent a distinctive trait of Ulcinj and a symbol of its uniqueness. The Large (Stoj) Beach, with a length of 13 km and a width of 50 m on average, is the largest beach; it stretches in the northwest-southeast direction making a mild curve from Porta Milena Cove to the mouth of the Bojana. The beach is 4 km away from the town centre. In the construction boom, particularly in the aftermath of the 1979 earthquake, the very centre of the town was connected with the Large Beach and, further away, with Stoj by spacious and modern houses offering substantial accommodation capacity for all tourists' requirements.
This beach is madeentirely of fine sand of whitish-grey colour, the size of grains ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 mm. The bottom of the shallows and the entire bathing area have the same qualities, rendering bathing exceptionally enjoyable, suitable for the elderly population, and a true joy for the little ones.
Its background is covered with pine wood, thick shrubs, evergreen and deciduous trees. At the very beginning of the beach, in a beautiful park area, there is a hotel complex; in the background of the beach, from the modern road Ulcinj Donji Stoj and Gornji Stoj to the mouth of the Bojana, a large number of private houses have been built offering tourists their facilities for accommodation.
The Small Beach (Rana) with a cove is located between the Nuradin Headland (Punta e Nuradinit) and Ratislav or Suka Headland. This cove is also a port - the Ulcinj quay for ships, sailing-boats, fishing-boats and other vessels. In part it serves as a natural marina (Mandrac or Mendrec and Kaceme). The cove is shielded from the chilly northeasterly wind.
This semicircular beach is 600 m long with an average width of 25 m. Its sand shares the same qualities with that of the Large Beach. As early as the nineteenth century the first tourists visiting Ulcinj used this beach for bathing.
In the summer months the area along the beach turns into the living centre of the town, a promenade and meeting place for tourists and locals. In the vicinity there are a few hotels and a number of private houses offering accommodation with modern conveniences; the area is also awash with restaurants, bars, etc.
To the east of the beach a stunning pine wood stretches interspersed with a lot of decorated rocky beaches where sunbathing and swimming in the pure sea give tourists immense joy and pleasure. The feeling is additionally enhanced by the fresh air filled with the scent of sulphur springs and aromatic plants. Situated in this area is also the famous "women's beach" (nudist) with sulphur springs possessing precious medicinal qualities that have proven particularly effective in treating female infertility and other conditions.
The Ada. In the year of 1858 the ship "Merita" in the possession of Antun Allegretti from Trogir sank in the Bojana River. As two tiny islets lay in the same place, it is assumed that over time the shipwreck and the islets formed first a sandbank and then the present island, which, becoming triangular in shape, divided the river into two arms. The island is about 2.8 km long and 1.8 km wide. Two sides of the Ada are splashed by the fresh water of the Bojana, while the third side - the sandy beach, is bathed by the open sea. On the shores of this part of the Bojana wooden lodges have been constructed with miraculous fishing devices reminiscent of exotic areas of the Far East. Isolated from the real world, the Ada represents a true oasis offering peace and relaxation, ready to bring joy and happiness to the lovers of freedom, nudity and blissful communion with nature.
Milena Canal. This canal was dug in 1885 to enable water from Lake Zoganj to discharge into the sea. However, due to cryptodepression, the sea water penetrated the lake through the canal producing an even greater effect; now it is used as a good fish reserve and hatchery, as well as a fishing attraction.
Valdanos. Shaped like a narrow horse-shoe, Valdanos is located four nautical miles to the north-west of Ulcinj between Mavrijan and Mendra.
Valdanos is a gravelly beach consisting of 1 -20 cm size pebbles; it is 600 m long and 20 m wide on average. Unlike other beaches, Valdanos is shielded from winds - southerly and northerly alike. The Valdanos valley is covered with an olive grove historically closely tied to the life of the hard-working population of Ulcinj. The Ulcinj olive grove with some 74,000 olive trees gives a special appeal to the town; around 75% of it is found in one single complex. The average age of olive trees exceeds 300 years, with some trees dating from as early as the period of Ancient Greece (5th century BC). The renowned Ulcinj olive oil was a commodity rivalling gold and reaching Trieste, Venice, Rome, Cairo, Shkoder, Skopje, Prizren, etc.
The olive grove and pine wood are "the lungs" of the town.
Krute, Old Ulcinj and Kruce. These coves stretch to the north-west of Valdanos and with their narrow gravelly and rocky beachesgive immense pleasure to bathers.
Lake Sas. In the vicinity of 38 villages, 16 km upstream from the mouth of the Bojana, is Lake Sas, connected to the river by a narrow canal and lying some 22 km away from Ulcinj. In summer months the lake is 3,210 m long and 1,500 m wide, reaching a maximum depth of 7.8m at Begovo Oko. Lake Sas is a favourite target of hunters going after marsh waders (gamebirds), but also fish, as the lake is inhabited by some 23 fish species.
Apart from Lake Zoganj, the Stoj area and some other parts too represent the richest hunting and fishing area in the region but are also particularly appealing to birdwatchers.
