About Ulcinj Geographical Position and Climatic Features


Ulcinj is located on the southernmost part of the Adriatic Sea coast. The area lies between the latitudes of 19° 22' 30" and 19° 8' 30" E, longitude 41° 5' 6" N, and belongs to the marginal subtropic zone of the European Mediterranean.
The southern part of the municipality occupies 30 km of the Adriatic Sea coastline, while its eastern part takes up the same length of the River Bojana. Lake Sas lies in its central area with the Rumija massif stretching in its hinterland.

The entire area of 255 square kilometres is a unique example of beauty: vast sandy beaches, the sea, the river, the lake, the mountains, and lush vegetation.


The Climate

 

The area of Ulcinj is characterised by the Adriatic variant of the Mediterranean climate and subtropic vegetation. Ulcinj has a highly favourable climate that can rival the most renowned Mediterranean tourist centres. Thankstoitsclimaticfeatures, Ulcinj is an exquisite summer and winter resort alike. The average annual temperature of 16° C makes Ulcinj warmer than many other coastal towns. Notwithstanding its sunny and warm summers, due to continual air currents exceedingly hot days are a rarity. The coldest month is January which has seen an average temperature of 8.6° C for many years; the warmest is July with a temperature of 26.3° C. The average daytime temperature measured at 1 p.m. amounts to 18.5° C (January: 9.7° C, August: 28.2° C).

The average air temperature by season is as follows: winter 9.6° C, spring 14.5° C, summer 24.4° C, autumn 17.5° C. The absolute maximum temperature in July is 38.5° C, and the absolute maximum temperature in January is 8.4° C. The air temperature in Ulcinj is suitable for sunbathing and swimming in a six-month period, from May to October, with the sea temperature being appropriate too.
Insolation. Ulcinj is among the places with the highest insolation values in the Adratic: the average annual insolation received is 218 days, i.e. 2,706 hours per year or 7.4 hours per day. Ulcinj has the greatest number of hours of sunshine in the summer - 11.5 hours a day. The southern coast, comprising Ulcinj too, is deemed to be the brightest area in the Mediterranean.
The most typical winds of the area are the Bora (a northeasterly wind), Jugo (a southerly wind) and the Maestral (a landward breeze). The Bora is a chill wind blowing in late autumn and winter. Jugo comes in the autumn-winter-spring period bringing rain with it and creating huge waves on the sea. The Maestral, blowing from the west and south-west, is a pleasant wind bringing refreshment during the hottest summer hours. It reaches its peak value (10m/sec) between 2 and 3 p.m. Thanks to this landward breeze, sultry and oppressively hot summer days in Ulcinj are quite rare.
Precipitation is exclusively confined to rain, the average value being 1,344 mm/m2.

 

Vegetation

 

Ulcinj's climate gave rise to three separate bands of vegetation. The first band encompasses evergreen vegetation (up to 300 m in height), the predominant species being olives, figs, citrus fruits (watermelons, tangerines, oranges, and lemons), almonds, kiwi fruit, etc.
The second band is comprised of chestnuts, pomegranates, grapevines and cereal crops, while the third band includes pears, apples, plums and the like.

The coastal area owes its special appeal to pine trees, agaves, palms, and other decorative plants.
Vast areas of arable land, as well as a clean environment devoid of industrial or any other pollutants, made more productive by the population through the cultivation of organic food, give Ulcinj a particularly distinctive trait in the tourist market. Agricultural products from Ulcinj (watermelons, tangerines, oranges, kiwi fruit, figs, pomegranates, peppers, tomatoes and others) have filled the markets of the former Yugoslav Republics of Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, etc.
Combined with diverse fish, freshly caught in the sea, river or lake by the hands of diligent Ulcinj fishermen, and with authentic local brandy and wine, all these products make Ulcinj's table distinctive. Also, the widely known cuisine, awash with local specialities prepared by skilled and experienced cooks and served by radiant and dexterous waiters, cannot leave anyone indifferent.
