Ulcinj - health tourism

Thanks to its exceptional natural factors, clean and clear sea, medicinal sandy beaches, sulphur mineral water, medicinal mud, sea salt and its alkaline, mild and stimulating Mediterranean climate - Ulcinj is a world-renowned natural health resortwithsuperbqualities. During his stay in Ulcinj in 1925, Prof. Bernhard Nocht, Director of the Institute for Tropical Diseases in Hamburg, said, "Never in my life have I seen a place as rich in stars as Ulcinj". The value of this area for a human organism is tremendous and diverse, and Prof. Dr. Lemoch, President of the European League for Rheumatism, said in an occasion during his visit to Ulcinj in 1964, "Therapeutically speaking, Ulcinj has a great future". In June 1910 the scientist of world stature, Mihailo Pupin, requested through his agent that the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Kingdom of Montenegro grant him a licence to open a sanatorium for the treatment of certain conditions and diseases. All this accounted for Ulcinj being proclaimed in 1922 by a decree of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia a "spa and climatic resort".
The advantages of the Ulcinj climate are a key factor of the life of and a stay in this town, with the sea temperature enabling optimal bathing conditions for a six-month period from May to October.
In summer, water visibility reaches 38 m, and the deep sea in front of Ulcinj has recorded the highest visibility on the Adriatic Sea -56 m.
The annual number of days with a temperature of more than 18° C is 194 or 54 %, while insolation values are among the highest on the Mediterranean with around 2,700 hours per year or around 7.4 hours a day on average.
Another medicinal factor is the sand on the beach - exceptionally pure, outstandingly fine, with absolutely no traces of soil, mud or organic substances. Ulcinj also prides itself on the unpolluted environment, devoid of any industrial plants and the like.
Chemically speaking, Ulcinj sand comprises some 30 mineral ingredients which are very active in a biological sense. It is characterised by mild radioactivity rendering it very suitable for application in medical purposes, particularly for treatment of organs of movement, spine, rheumatism, discopathy, sciatica and post-traumatic conditions.
Sulphur water springing up right next to the sea in the vicinity of the Galeb and Albatros hotels on the "female beach" has "magical" medicinal qualities. This water is claimed to be particularly beneficial to infertile women and has an exceptionally rich mineral composition. The mineral mud (peloid) is spread around the pool of the Ulcinj saltworks, some 2 km away from the sea. Scientific examinations of this mud have confirmed its outstanding medicinal features placing it among the best muds discovered and researched on the Adriatic so far.
Unrefined sea salt extracted from the pool of the saltworks in Ulcinj contains "sea concentrate", which, through mere addition of fresh water, can offer all the possibilities of treatment offered by the sea water; it is particularly recommended in the treatment of rheumatism and organs of movement.
All these elements may sometimes be applied to replace medication, and sometimes as their supplements, to achieve better and longer-lasting results. Places offering together such an abundance of diverse natural factors are rare.
